Is your transmission failing?
5 Weird Signs Your Transmission is Failing
Find Out if You Need Transmission Repair
There’s no denying that automatic transmissions are different from manual ones. Automatic transmissions are more popular in the United States because they’re easier to use, shifting gears automatically for an optimal driving experience without you having to think about it. There are also die-hard stick shift fans out there who prefer to play a bigger role in their driving experience and who take pride in owning a rarer car and a special set of skills. However, there’s one major thing these two types of transmissions have in common: they both play a massive role in your car’s functioning, they can experience a lot of wear and tear, and they can both fail.
Fortunately, there are a few signs you can look out for that can indicate that your transmission is failing.
If you drive a stick shift and you notice you’re having a harder time than usual getting your car into gear, this can be a sign that something is amiss.
For both transmission types, if you hear a weird noise when your car is in neutral, that could also indicate an issue with your transmission. This can happen because of mechanical wear, worn bearings, old or low transmission fluid, or other reasons.
If your car is slipping gears – that is, it’s not shifting smoothly or staying in gear while you drive – that’s also a big red flag that all is not well with your car’s transmission. This can cause you to have less control over your car than usual, which is inherently dangerous, so definitely prioritize getting this issue checked out.
If you’re experiencing a burning smell, your transmission may be overheating. This usually happens when you don’t have enough transmission fluid. It’s important to have enough fluid to keep the system lubricated, which helps it run smoothly, so be sure to fix this issue as soon as possible.
A dragging clutch can also tell you that your transmission is having issues. That means that your clutch is refusing to disengage, even when the pedal is totally depressed. When clutch drag happens, it may be hard to start your car and to shift gears. It may also cause your vehicle to move while it’s starting, and it can even cause your engine to stall in severe cases.
